Hi my name is Ley Holloway, welcome to my site. I am a designer and illustrator, trained at West Herts College in Watford UK, gaining a BA in 1997. Recently I began making jewellery, something I’ve always wanted to do, using sea glass found on the beaches of North Devon. This lovely material is combined with vintage and recycled beads as well as new ones. Sea Glass, also known as Mermaid’s Tears or Tears of the Sea, is one of the few man made things which emerges from the sea more beautiful than when it went in. The action of the waves and rocks smoothes and rounds the fragments of glass creating gemlike objects with a unique loveliness. Click on the links at left to see my jewellery and other stuff. |

Also found on the local beaches are fragments of ceramic washed smooth by the waves. Many retain a clear pattern, like this piece of willow pattern border to the left, while others are faded almost to invisibility. Once beautiful china is reduced to tantalizing fragments, while quite mundane domestic ware takes on a new beauty with metals and salts leached from the ocean giving them a new pattern. I use these fragments to create jewellery in the same way as the glass. Some pieces reveal their age through a section of makers mark but this is rare. Obviously ceramic is softer than glass and so pieces are often newer but just as pretty. |
